The major sources of local employment consist of freight industry, retail, construction, immigration and Customs, government and non-governmental organisations. Freight is the cornerstone of the town’s economy. As a border town there is a lot of goods movement in Beitbridge hence freight industry thrives. This has also spawned a wide range of other support industries such as third party vehicle insurance, construction, and cargo transport and retail services.
Informal sector activities are primarily vending. In the outskirts of Municipality of Beitbridge, livestock farming and citrus are the main activity in the area; however there are several irrigations schemes to strengthen crop farming. Due to low rainfalls, agricultural produce is for consumption. Matabeleland South Province of which Beitbridge is, leads the country in cattle production and Beitbridge boasts of being a major producer of beef cattle.
A number of youths are employed in South African farms where employment is readily available. These inject the much needed funds in Beitbridge’s economy
To support the informal sector, Municipality of Beitbridge has started to facilitate and promote the development of the informal trade and manufacturing industries. This includes providing infrastructure to start-up small and medium businesses (SMEs). The primary objective is to reduce the dependency of the local economy on the freight industry, and to assist small traders to develop their businesses into fully fledged enterprises with the potential of exporting their products.
Having been declared an Export Processing Zone, the government went on to establish infrastructure to support this development. These are meant for producing some products and export to the international world through South Africa. Due to economic challenges the infrastructure is currently being used by a leading import and export clearing company Manica Pvt Ltd.
Another emerging sector is tourism. To keep up with one of the fastest growing industries worldwide, Beitbridge boast some of the best hotels infrastructure in the country. The local accommodation and tour institutions now offer a high degree of quality services on par with international standards. This market has also contributed to the creation of more employment and the development of the town.
Beitbridge has an efficient transport network linking it to the hinterland and neighbouring African countries in the form of highways, and a railway service and air links. The town has a small aerodrome which only caters for small private planes. The common mode of transport used in Beitbridge is road and rail. Haulage trucks are a common sight in Beitbridge as they travel in and out of Beitbridge. Three railway lines meet in Beitbridge: the South African Spoornet line to Polokwane-Beitbridge, the National Railways of Zimbabwe line Beitbridge-Gweru via Rutenga and the Beitbridge-Bulawayo Railway. The Beitbridge-Bulawayo Railway is used by both goods and passenger trains. Rail services convey bulk commodities, general cargo, refrigerated goods, and fuel and offer a comprehensive container service. Beitbridge is linked to the rail networks of Zimbabwe and Southern Africa.
Beitbridge enjoys a constant and high quality supply of potable water, while there is ample electricity supply for the local needs and new developments. Telecommunication services has tremendously improved were a high number of the community are now able to access high quality digital telephone, data, internet, satellite, cellular and radio communication services are available for all your needs. A large pool of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled labour workers provides able support to investors. The town has a single hospital and a clinic with highly qualified emergency and medical practitioners. However there are also a number of private clinics serving the town as well.
Banking institutions provide comprehensive domestic and international financial services, to ensure the safe and fast transfer of funds to and from any centre of the world. Despite being a small town Beitbridge accommodates over ten financial institutions. The town has several primary and secondary schools and a private college. There are however plans to establish tertiary institutions. Housing in Beitbridge ranges from upmarket to low cost houses that are fully serviced with water, electricity, sewage and surfaced roads. Hotels, lodges and resorts cater for the tourist market with a high standard of accommodation and related services.
